Pros & Cons
Pros
The book is long-winded, a bit like the goldfinch, but funny too. The author is masterful with the english language and palpable prose. The writing in this book is astonishingly, staggeringly good.

What a disappointment. They're so abundant that they even manage to sneak up on you. Not even a slight chuckle. Very dangerous, that.
There is no reason to care for the main character, who is a downtrodden, milquetoast guy. There was more backstory than story. The main character and the side characters were poorly characterized.

However i really dont think the pynchon comparisons are accurate some critics have a tendency to compare anything relatively postmodern in spirit to pynchon and i wouldnt say this novel has a pynchonian flavor

One problem with these grand historical novels is they often have a distant tone treating characters like ideas or concepts rather than people
