I am more likely to read Christian non-fiction, than fiction. However, I recently found out about this author and this book, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. The Last Guardian might be a long read for some readers, but it is worth it. It would make a great summer read by the poolside, on the beach or up in the mountains. Or curl up next to the fire with it or savor it during those periods when the weather keeps you homebound. You won't regret it. I found this book and author under Christian and Science Fiction categories, but it equally qualifies as a mystery novel. In fact, Johnson interweaves a few mysteries and ties them together in a most satisfactory way at the end. For the Christian reader, there may be a few places that might be a little troubling theologically, but hang in there and you will be relieved and rewarded. As the mysteries are resolved, so are the apparent theological conflicts. The author's notes at the end also provide further illumination. Johnson clearly knows Scripture and neatly avoids a theological landmine or two along the way.To further hold your interest, there is a wonderful romantic subplot. And interspersed throughout the novel, Johnson paints some lush descriptions of flora and fauna, deftly wielding the author's pen as a foremost landscape artist would wield brush and palette. And there is plenty of action and adventure throughout. While some of the scenes might test the best special effects departments, this is a highly visual book and would translate well to the screen. The word pictures painted by Johnson would be an excellent guide to create a film adaptation.While it didn't draw me to the novel, as a Cornell grad around the time that some of the action unfolds, I was delighted to see scenes of Cornell and Ithaca occupy a portion of the book.I enthusiastically endorse this book and it should be added to the collection of any serious reader.  Read Less
