The story starts with a bang gus and his brother maxwell an inventor foil a demon attack in hyde park in 1865

The authors writing reminded me of the stories of sherlock holmes as narrated by doctor watson except in this case the narrator augustus potts who is ex military and a writer by trade tells the tales of his brother maxwell potts who is an aloof scientist who is always buried in his work with little patience for those of lesser intellect

Even the chapters could be read as separate stories with different plot lines very similar to the adventures of sherlock holmes

The only flaw i felt was that the main hero was conflicted and had a past not unusual for a complex character but i felt the character did not always seem to have the same personality and motivationsswinging from brave to cowardly and strong to weak with not always perfect logic
