A good deal of this was dovetailed into my childhood. He neither glorifies the fifties and openly discusses the many problems it had.

It's colorful, engrossing, full of marvelous detail and humanity. The nook is long but never tiresome. This book fills a lot of holes for me.
Cons
This is superficially odd. It's just another shameless glorification of the mythical 50s which never existed. There isn't any new information, and halberstam leaves out information that isn't so favorable to people he really likes.
