The first part of the book is divided into 4 sections, with each section describing the 3 days from each of the 4 children's viewpoints.

The 4 children decide to work together towards a common goal of saving the life is sweet candy factory, even though doing so only directly benefits logan, and even though this goal would seem to be against the direct interests of 2 of the other children.
