    There are no happily tied up endings – indeed, there are no endings to speak of in any of the stories as each leaves off in the middle of life – sometimes maddeningly in the middle of a problem - making it clear that a nicely tied up solution is impossible.

    With the exception of a protagonist who is filipino, the female characters often seemed rather aloof, passionate, but also disconnected from the consequences of their actions – almost in the tradition of stereotypical masculine characters.

    Another is the onus of mandatory military service to all citizens, another the unique challenges of mizrahi living among the majority ashkenazi, another, a sexual energy that permeates many of the stories, and of course there is the ever looming threat of random and terrifying violence.
