When i unplug dock and use separate direct to surface pro 3 minidisplay port cable to hdmi adaptor cable monitor was recognized but did not work

In display click on advanced display setting choose your monitor click display adapter properties for display 2 new generic monitor property window pops up click monitor tab set screen refresh rate for your remote monitor to 60 hz

When i want to take my surface with me i simply unplugged the unit leaving the cables attached
