All the atari games were ongoing games where you just played for the highest score there was never any endings or conclusion to the games often times the controllers were clunky and the game play suffered

With super mario bros right off the bat the goal of the game is to have mario or luigi make it through 8 different worlds each with 4 side scrolling levels of platforms and save the princess at the end of the game

You would need to master the long distance jump to finish the 81 stage where you have to make to big leap of faith jumps and beat the clock to the flagpole
