Pros & Cons
Pros
Drivers from yamaha/steinburg work on windows 7 (obsolete) and windows 8. The interface is compatible with mac and windows.
Usb dac from steinberg/yamaha is the definition of value and performance. The box contains a large diaphragm condenser microphone.
It works but could have been a tad better. It works like it was design from the scratch to used with audio and all cases was workaround.
This one is cheaper and that's quite nice. Regardless, the steinberg is a winner, especially for the price. It's twice the price of the um2 but it actually works.
Well packaged and brand new, not open box. Great solid all metal, this interface has a great weight and feel to it. It also feels very solid, as the casing is completely metal. Built like a tank.
Cons
The led on the device indicating usb power will momentarily flicker, causing a very noticeable 1-2 second break in the audio. Decided to shut down when turning on the phantom power.
Set up is time-consuming and frustrating. Build quality is problematic. Support is terrible too.
First gen version was a nightmare when trying to use amp sims like thermionik by kazrog. It has a major issue with some computers that steinberg has been trying to fix for over a year.
Highlights
Quality
Excellent product works well and does the job
So far i am happy with the product and would recommend it to anyone that is looking for a cheaper beginner audio interface
I kept getting random blue screens with the focusrite drivers
I was so frustrated with the um2
Competitiveness
I currently use this with a shure sm58 mic and it connects perfectly
Goes up to 24bit 192 khz and it makes mu at2020 sound so much better compared to using the behringer um2
I replaced it with a 2i2 and dont have this problem
The headphone amp is somewhat weak but can easily drive efficient headphones like my marantz mph2 but not my beyerdynamic custom studios
