    Colorful and entertaining without getting bogged down into minutiae this is a marvelous account of how a small city built on the hills above the river tiber came to rule a quarter of the worlds population and sewed the seeds of its own undoing in the process

    The one criticism that i have of the book is that it does tend to jump around a fair amount however i think that the author does a good job of connecting her ideas and maintaining a progressive frame and focus on the first millennium of roman history
