Pros & Cons
Pros
It smells new. Makes a great walkabout or travel lens. Arrived packaged great and in excellent condition.
It is not the fastest or the sharpest but it is good enough for general use. Not as sharp as their fantastic prime lenses (35 mm and 50 mm) but good for purpose. It is bulkier than the nex kit lenses, but sometimes that isn't a bad thing.
Mm (42 crop) is still wide enough for most shots. Wide angle is perfect for landscapes and close subject. I use it sometimes with the sony tele-converter vcl-dh1758 and it extends the range to 184mm (35 mm equivalent) which is not bad for some mid tel... Read More
I use this with the a7s for average indoor lighting situations. Provides affordable quality for family and indoor documentary work.
Cons
The zeiss zoom isn't worth the money, leaving us with a giant hole in the most important lens category unless we want to pony up $2,200 for the soon-to-be-released g master. Worst chromatic aberration i've ever seen. Stay away from it.
Even on a full frame sensor everything taken with this lens is mush.

Competitiveness
Just as good as the much more expensive zeiss option and makes a great walkabout or travel lens
Actually better on the a7 that the results ive seen with the 1200 sony 2470mm pseudozeiss
And so if you buy this lens you will get no more respect from the haughty types than the guy who shows up at a bmw rally in a mustang
There are many many lenses that can be used on the a7 and a7r but for the money you wont find a better allaround starter lens
