    One note, you have to hook the receiver up to both gpio pins 21 and 27, so i ran four jumpers from the receiver back to the pi -- the middle two pins on the receiver are tied together, so you can jumper one to pin 21 and one to pin 27.

    I found it necessary to solder a wire to the antenna pad on the transmit module (3 pin board) before i could get any range out of it.

    The range on the receiver isn't very good so you need to be close to it when you are reading in codes but this isn't really an issue since you only need to read the codes once.
