After replacing the cable i ended up taping the case so it would close and then covered it in some decorative washi tape
Soldering it and putting it back together wasn't too hard but the case didn't want to stay shut so i put a little superglue and placed a couple clamps on it
So all you need to do is: (i) open the casing using a hairdryer to melt the glue and a pair of pliers to open the case [not 100% straightforward but workable in such a fashion as not to damage the case much], (ii) cut off the old cable close to the rubber stopper, (iii) trim and tin the cut leads, (iv) reassemble and glue the case, (v) clamp while the glue dries
