    I do double up the holders to set pans on the table, as these are quite thin.

    I like silicone pot holder over traditional since it not only allows you to put your hot items on them but if you need to lean a pan or tray against a wall, i usually stick a pot hold under the item since it has a grip, then put them in front if it to secure it.
