The loop close to the dogs collar is very helpful when you need to control the dog in tight situations as the loop is before the bungee section of the leash

I would not recommend this leash for a dog that does not understand at least some concept of heeling

The bungy end of the leash makes it so there is less of a shock to your dogs neck when the leash is being pulled out of range

I can not stress enough how wonderful it is to have flexibility in the leash i can not imagine having a handsfree leash that has no flexibility it would be awful for your back and awful for your dog
