The instructions on the inside of the box show how to pull it out of the wall outlet to leave the apple plug in it as well as how to separate the two plugs leaving the apple plug still in the outlet

However given that many wall outlets are not in the best of locations to begin with such as behind furniture or require bending over to reach them it is still a pain to deal with

It is a passthrough charger so it charges your phone first then tops itself off when its both plugged into the wall and to your phone
