Pros & Cons

Pros

Mxl r144 ribbon mic is a total bargain. This is the best sounding mic i have used that costs under $100.

The r144 is a good bang for the buck. Makes me sound like a million bucks! The sound is large, spacious and sounds classy and “expensive.

Mxl r144 is a good-sounding ribbon mic (especially for the price) if you get too close, it is downright boomy. While my condenser mics are sensitive to 'plosives so i use a pop filter, the r144 seems somewhat more sensitive, especially to words beginn...  Read More

This mic really shines when combined with an sm57 or e609 on a guitar amp. Great on guitar amps. I own a royer r-121 ribbon microphone, it's pretty much the industry standard for ribbon instrument microphones.

Light and gentle breath, not a hard and forceful blow. It has a warmth and a natural sound i have never gotten with ldc's.

Cons

The $60 mxl 770 is much quieter, warmer, and useful. Save money and buy a royer.

Quality

Its because of the quality that i gave the mic 4 stars not 5

Once you accomplished that this microphone has the quality of a 300 microphone

Turning down the treble may make the strident quality less obtrusive but you still have a crappy high end

I am not confident in the build quality

Price

The r144 receives generally good reviews and the price is low enough so it went onto my things to get list

We also have a bluebird that is about 2x the price we paid for this

Packaging/appearance

Wanting to move up to a ribbon microphone the mxl r144 package has served me well

Competitiveness

I boost mine with a cloudlifter and a bit of eq and shockingly it sounds wonderful

After putting a cloudlifter cl1 between the r144 and the zoom r16 and setting the gain at about the 12 oclock position the mic came to life

The new mxl r144 ribbon microphone is unmodified at this point this is my first encounter with this particular low priced mxl model

Then i ran it through my presonus blue tube and man talk about aggressive

It sounds nothing like a cheep mike

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

Really i could probably resell this microphone for twice the money

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

And i will also tell you that i purchased two of them to find an example i was happy with i returned the other one

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

And be advised the only difference between the two mics visually was the ribbons themselves and the ribbon support

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

Sure it is reported by people like michael joly and other ribbon knowledgable people that the ribbon needs to be centered in the magnetic field and that it should not sag

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

Well ok i have also never see a written explanation as to what happens to the audio if the ribbon is sagging only that it should not sag if you want good performance

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

The large meshed outside cage i left obviously but the inside smaller metal mesh screencage that is soldered to it i removed
