The difference was apparent in a number of ways but the new setup is running well in direct mode with absolutely no need for use of tone controls

Sound output is tight precise and powerful without being boomy or muddy and has been clear enough for me to quickly realise that itunes had defaulted back to a much lower sample rate and sounded poor compared to the identical album played through the denon dcd520ae
