This is one of the shorter, most down to earth, and practical overviews of MMA fighting styles that I have run across. The authors did a very good job of writing and structuring the book's contents, giving newcomers --and more advanced practitioners-- an introduction to the history, culture, goals, classic techniques, and modern variations.One thing I particularly enjoyed was that the authors allocated a fair amount of the discussion to Judo. It seems to me that Judo is often overlooked as a functional set of techniques that can serve any MMA athlete quite well. For example, fighters such as Mikey Dimic (one of the authors) and Karo Parisyan have fared very well using judo on the mats and in the octagon, with Mickey winning two world titles in Sport Jujitsu, and Karo holding the UFC welter-weight title belt for a period of time.  Read Less

The tremendous growth of the Ultimate Fighting Championships, cage fighting and the Pride fights has made mixed martial arts very popular today. This interesting and highly informative 230 page soft cover book (Mixed Martial Arts Unleashed: Mastering the most moves for victory by Mickey Dimic with Christopher Miller) book explains in detail the sport and self-defense aspects of this dynamic combat activity.This fully illustrated book is organized into six chapters. Chapter one (History and origins) covers the Greeks, the Romans, wrestling, boxing, Muay Thai and from Judo to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Chapter two (Basic skills: Striking and defense) focuses on solo training and the basics. Chapter three explains basic ground skills such as wrestling pins, escapes and submissions. Chapter four teaches various tactics and strategies in mixed martial arts. Chapter five shows sparring equipment and techniques. The final chapter explains about full mixed martial arts sparring and competition.This is one of the better books I have read on training for mixed martial arts.
