The top is a separate zipped section from the bottom also separately zipped so you can keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold without combining different temperature foods in the same compartment

This is super nice as i love to carry things over the shoulder not in hand and now that it is no longer mine and is my daughters there is no way she would have room in her backpack for it
