The answer is if you are doing smoking this is really a mandatory piece of kit you simply cannot do it as well without some sort of dual thermometers

Dont even bother attempting to rely on the thermometer in the lid of the wsm mine is about 40 degrees too low when compared to the temperature on the top grate

The transmitter units are rain proof albeit if it was really raining hard i may put it in a plastic bag

The transmitter comes with a little metal hanging clip which hands beside the lid on the wsm

You need a small philips screwdriver to get the battery compartment open on the transmitter as screws compress a water seal

A quick note that the version sold by smart shop uk appears to include free gloves of some kind on the product image but this isnt the case
