Longitude' by dava sobel is an entertaining overview of the work of john harrison, clockmaker, who eventually solved one of the greatest maritime problems of the age. Fascinating book about the development of clocks, navigation and history.
The book is full of treachery and intrigue. It is entertaining, with engaging players and occasionally quirky plot. Was recommended this book whilst lamp swinging and chewing the fat in the messroom whilst alongside in liverpool.

When you know what happens the genie is out of the bottle and the t ale is just routine. There is a good story to tell, as evidenced by the tv programme on harrison, but this book contrives to make the whole tale tedious.

The key to this is of course the mechanical genius john harrison and not only his remarkable efforts especially as he received no formal education but also is determination to get recognised

To be able then to more accurately determine where you are it obviously becomes apparent that you need an accurate timekeeper

For the main part of this though it is about harrison and his everincreasing work at adapting and trying to create smaller timepieces than his first version

I hadn’t realised what a huge problem a lack of knowledge of longitude was or the disasters it could cause
