Pros

It works great! I have an indoor remote that will shut off the plugin when the weather isn't freezing, making this a breeze to operate. Always worked even in the coldest weather. When you reorder it is at the time of year when the product is in high d...  Read More

This heater is a no-brainer. The ring contains the heated water, and it is shielded from much exposer. It's just the right wattage (100w) for my size ponds and weather in indiana, doesn't warm up the water and confuse the koi what time of year it is.

The birds and squirrels also use the opening for water. I like where i can set the heater on the ice and it will melt its way through. Our farm cats also use it.

Cons

The design is great and they do work to keep a hole in the ice during frigid winters but they don't last. There's a short period every year when temperatures fall below zero degrees fahrenheit and stay there for several days. Tried to dry it out, plug...  Read More

Very unhappy with this product. None were electrocuted. I'm about to take one of these apart in hopes of discovering why they fail so quickly.

This is not returnable, past the date. No longer heats as well. And just outside of the warranty period, of course.

One lasted three years and the other four

I have found that with just the heater in the water it will keep an open circle of unfrozen water the same size as the heater itself but the rest of the pond will ice over as the temperature continues to fall

When this happens birds cant drink although fish in the pond would still be able to breathe

So what i do is place an aquarium air pump on the edge of the fountain under a bowl so it wont be buried in snow

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

I run air hoses from the air pump to airstones lying on the floor of the pond below the heater which creates a column of rising bubbles and circulates the water from the bottom of the pond to the top where the heater is

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

This heats all the water in the pond slightly

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

So instead of having just an unfrozen circle the size of the heater the entire surface of the pond is ice free until the temperature falls far below freezing when a small amount of ice begins to form at the outer edge of the pond

The first picture was taken after 4 inches of snow had fallen and temperature was 22 degrees f
