Some of the decks i looked at had pitch control for playback purposes only- not recording.

First problem, when plugged in there is power to the transformer and circuit board even with switch is in off position.

Constant live current to the unit will burn out the electronic in 20+yrs.

The drive system is a secondary mover, powered by a belt, which does not put the full force of the motor to tape.

So a tape not working in the jvc will work in the cheapo player.
