Pros

Everything is laid out with utter naturalness and optimal musicality. Yet the music making is by no means faceless or bland. If you are a more casual listener, or a veteran comparative listener, your aural palate occasionally needs cleansing.

Bernard haitink is a formidable brahmsian. It's fascinating to compare haitink's symphonies with abbado's or klemperer's. I am a haitink fan, and his brahms interpretations do not disappoint.

violin concerto; sinfonia. There is much competition in brahms (as there is in all the great composers), but, i think this set deserves to be noticed in the heap.

Brahms' two serenades aim to charm and scintillate. Haydn variations communicate a tension more often found in the concert hall. Both serenades are included.

The fourth is a real knockout, not in the toscanini mold, but dynamic and perfectly paced. I prefer the quicker paced performances of the 1st movement as long as the performers make the appropriate adjustments for the various tender and slower portion...  Read More

Cons

The cds are not as substantial as they should be. Skips in two places.

I disgree with the reviewer about the violin and piano concertos

The sound is uniformly glorious reminding us of why the royal concertgebouw is often the first choice among world class orchestras and why phillips was such an admired recording company

There are innumerable editions of the brahms orchestral music available at bargain price to tempt neophytes and veteran collectors alike

There is never an eccentric or attentiongrabbing gesture

Yet the music making is by no means faceless or bland

In the violin concerto szerying leans in to the lyricism but doesnt respond as fully to the joie de vivre particularly in the third movement

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

The only performance in this set that comes close to outright dullness is that of the double concerto with szeryng and starker

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

Both soloists of course aquit themselves splendidly from a technical point of view and once again lyricism dominatesbut to the expense this time of compelling forward movement not a question of tempo

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

In the end this double concerto doesnt say much though it will surely please the ear
