Pros & Cons

Pros

Italian folktales by italo calvino is a collection of italian folktales. The stories were collected and rewritten by the great novelist and literary critic.

They always cheer me up or give a smile. The tales are quick and easy to remember. Lots of puzzles and rewards for good behavior. Not that the tales dwell on these things in detail but you will encounter them.

More artful and comic as narratives, surprising in ways grimm's rarely is. Less lugubrious, less sentimental and have fewer predictable trope. Worthy of the legacy left by the brothers grimm and others of this genre.

English translation by george martin is taut and clean. Arrived in very good condition just as advertised!

Cons

The prose in this collection is dry and sparse. The kindle version has only 53 tales, the print version over 200.

If youve noted the glowing reviews and prizes you might still hold back thinking 34well im sure its fantastic in italian but the english probably doesnt quite capture the brilliance of the original

Be aware that this collection isnt your usual compendium of 34ive heard that before34 stories

Theyre all rather strange sometimes theyre downright weird as if the good folk of traditional italian villages were tuned into the xfiles several centuries ago

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

Unfortunately he passed away the same year so he couldnt get this award

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

Elements of one storycharacters bits of dialogue and in some cases even considerable fragments of plotsurface in another story time and time again

Calvino has also left some of the warts untouchedevery now and then a story is obviously truncated forgets to mention what becomes of an important character or completely switches plot halfway through

I was first given this book at age 5 and since then have gone through 4 copies

I would recommend buying the hardback version because if you love it like me the binding will fall apart after the first 3 or 4 reads
