My only complaint -- which is really not the book or author's fault -- is that version 5 of d3 is out now and it changed a few things, including the code for importing csv/tsv and setting the variable types; this made for a frustrating start to a first project with d3 as even google searches as of nov 2018 mostly bring up answers for v4.

There is qualitative information from coders; it would've been better to see their code or a link to the code; read this book near a computer to try things out as it uses a lot of ir (internet references) for code.
