    We have used the a cartridges and they seem to be the cheaper buy only at the price, but overall cost of use the x is the way to go.

    If you print 20 pages a month then buy an a cartridge (such as 64a) but if you print more than a ream of paper in a month then go the route of an x cartridge (64x).
