Pros

My hat goes off to amazon, thankyou. It's not enough to actually take away some of my fondness towards the book, but it is indeed something that should be noted. A rosetta stone for students is how i think of this great book.

This is a must for any blossoming egyptologist. It should work perfectly as a stepping stone between the beginner aspiring to learn the egyptian language and the more complex/more scholarly text.

This book is wonderful for beginners. Useful either as a first introduction or as a refresher/review. It mainly sticks to standard formulas, but that restrained scope works well for not getting too complex for beginners.

Each exercise has an answer key at the end of the book for you to check your work, which i found to be invaluable. I also have sir alan gardiner's egyptian grammar, which is the gold standard for middle egyptian. Other titles cited are not easily port...  Read More

First chapter is a bit overwhelming. Tenses, verb forms and prepositions are clearly explained and modeled. The excursus sections are also quite enjoyable to read.



Cons

Gardiner's middle egyptian is a much better book to buy. I hate the fact that most libraries would buy it before buying gardner's book.

    I would suggest doing some simplified work on the most rudimentary aspects of hieroglyphics first such as egyptian hieroglyphicshow to read write them by stephane rossini dover1989

    Instead id just like to point out the fact that a revised edition of this book should be coming out in may 2003 isbn 0520239490 so if you are thinking about purchasing this guide you might want to wait for the new edition
