Irvine's how to be a stoic is a study of the life of epictetus. The appendix section of the book has a brief but useful outline of the hellenistic schools of practical philosophy.
Mp's writing is clear & expressive. Given his depth of knowledge, htbas is imminently readable.
Cons
It rambles with no rhythm or reason. It's every author's prerogative to suit his rhetoric to his ends.
Animals are altruistic. We are the only species that commits genocide. Just that these are some of the avalanche of questions i began having after the superficial explanation about living according to nature.

Personally i find the ancient stoics to be difficult to understand even in a good translation

Also much of their advice is specific to the ancient roman empire and culture which is radically different from every modern culture in many ways

The drawback to this approach is that epictetus’s contributions to the dialogue tend to be oversimplified and overshadowed by pigliucci’s personal reflections

While i agree with many of pigliucci’s views on politics and society i don’t agree that he should have devoted so much ink to them in this book
