The velcro on the top part of the mitten keeps it securely in place. The patches add friction so you can hold onto items securely.
Cons
Gloves/mittens need to be redesigned. The hinge for the flap is too high. These mittens are about as warm as a pair of white socks over my hands. Didn't expect the mitten option.

Ive tried the gloves that claim you can still use your smartphone with your index finger but in my case that turned out to be a false claim for those gloves
