Too often when i buy vermiculite i end up with something that is mostly dust

To be useful in potting soil the particles of vermiculite should be from one to five millimeters in diameter and preferably two to four

Finer particles do not perform the needed drainage function

Vermiculite is a fragile mineral so some dust is inevitable but socalled medium vermiculite contains entirely too much and since we are talking about a silicate mineral sifting out the fines is a hazardous process especially because the fine flakes of vermiculite can drift quite a distance on a light breeze
