They make wild decisions have extreme an at times inappropriate reactions to events and are otherwise determined to shock the reader and keep events moving

One character can be hopelessly foolhardy and goading a terrified companion into danger one second then the character sees something and becomes the terrified one and the companion then rushes headlong into certain doom dragging the other behind

The similarities to horror movies are actively acknowledged in the text and the author seems to be well aware of the use of these plot devices so the negative impact is minimal
