I do not recommend taking them off prior to installation at least one of the brackets to get correct spacing

There is some wind noise and since you know where it is coming from it doesnt bother anything

I shook it and tried to slide it but nothing moved or gave so im pretty confident that theyll stay in place

That got it tightened down satisfactorily but it makes putting the carriers on and taking them off rather tedious
