Pros & Cons

Pros

Lita judge's flight school is a cute book for young readers about a penguin who wants to fly. Through an ungainly collection of wings and string, they fashion a set of wings that allow the penguin to soar for a while.

The writing isn't exactly top notch, but there are some nice rhythms and this is very read out loudable. The illustrations are particularly pleasing -- colorful and full of life. The drawings are delightful in their own right.

This story is about a penguin who feels in his heart of hearts that he has the soul of an eagle. The compassionate birds that can fly help him experience the sensation of flight that he so desires. My other pet peeve, is the use of the word birdies.

Cons

It is hard not to see a very particular gender ideology subversively expressed in this story. This is marketed to ages 1-5 by simon & schuster.
