Use the little tuner key it is provided with. It's handy for keeping music and instrument together as well as a safe place for the tuning wrench. You absolutely need a tuner (or the ability to tune by ear) because it needs it weekly.

The sound is soft and lovely. Far better than the grating squeaks of a recorder. Sound is a little twangy but perhaps that's what it should be.

Cons

First note zither is handcrafted in europe but the box says made in china. I gave it a 3 on durability because to this i feel ambivalent. This is very touchy to tune.
