This novel is very well written but it is also very hard to read its the type of book that once you have read it you may need to read a light hearted book afterwards

Bullying even in or maybe especially in institutional forms is a terrible abuse and such is starkly portrayed on these pages

In many ways this is not a pleasant book to read there is a great deal of unfairness and grim reality in this story

A painful evocation of life in a prewwii public school where the tragedy of the death of a bright young pupil who is abused under the system leads to other much wider consequences particularly when there is a headmaster who is myopic to the reality
