I am the product of a big 10 state university with a doctorate in a social science field from another state university.
That, in fact, is pretty much what social inequality involves today.
Competitiveness
Received exactly as advertised and waay b4 suggested date - thank you.
Most of all, excellent sheep dreams of a world without a meritocratic elite.
Most americans work hard without receiving the rewards they've earned.
I think it's greatgood reading, true facts and he is right, college needs to be fixed.

Perhaps when somebody who doesn't have the same world view as charlie prof scam sykes or the dyspepsia of allan closing of the american mind bloom makes some of the same arguments about the emptiness of higher education as practiced by prestige-chasing administrators and glass bead collecting professors, that will change the minds of people whose priors would be to dismiss the earlier works because of disagreements with the authors thereof.

This book is completely aligned with the modern day curated child, sculpted from childhood by overbearing parents who wish to model their child into a vision of what they wish they themselves were and would become.

I'm hoping the author writes a book about children who are curated from childhood to become these alien drone-like creatures that fit a specific mold in order to be labeled high achievers.

Deresiewicz's only flaw (and it's a big one) is that he is very caught up in an idyllic, dreamy vision of what schools could become.

With the immense issue of student debt and trend towards shorter practical based college alternatives, deresiewicz would be better off framing his vision as a dream and not a solution.

I gave this five stars, not because i agree with all of deresiewicz's premises, conclusions, or solutions but because he has had the clear mindedness to call out the issues, virtues, and frustrations of a liberal arts education--and has also validated getting one in the first place.

And who cares whether he has every answer--the point of a liberal arts education is to ask questions and to question answers.
