Pros & Cons

The AI used to provide these results are constantly improving. These results might change.

Pros

It's a long and hefty hatchet, so it will pack a fairly decent hack.

Feels solid with great ergonomics. The molded rubber handle is nice to use. Trimming it down on the sides helped for me.

Quality estwing product. But then many reviewers are just whiners.

Strong, well made, solid, sturdy and a little heavy. Well packaged in protective mailing supplies. I’ve lost one and or had one stolen.

Because it's full tang you don't have to worry about messing up an unhardened eye or wooden shaft. Estwing axes is a well made axe that you could see would last you a lifetime.

Cons

Rusty brittle metal inconsistently covered by a peeling topcoat. It is not a terrible hatchet but there are much better offerings out there.

Quality

I was impressed with the quality of the axe when i first opened the package

This seems like a quality product and i cannot wait to try it out when i go camping

The only fault that i found with the axe upon receiving it is that the blade was very dull and needed to be sharpened

cut and split a lot of wood even hit and split a rock and still cutting wood without a product

Price

Very sharp and sturdy but you pay the price

Competitiveness

Have only had a short time but have had several estwing products over the years

I have a larger estwing axe as well and its been great

I have an estwing hatchet that is probably 20 years old and the handle is half the circumference of the new version

However i found that the blade was a bit dull when i first received it

I got the 14 all black version

Mine didnt come very sharp so i would recommend picking up a sharpening stone if you dont already have one

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

I used gun oil but when i applied it some of the black was coming off of the axe head

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

The axe came sharp enough for practical use if you intend to split small logs for firewood or need to get some pesky saplings out of your way but the steel used is susceptible to damage easily if not sharpened enough to take on hardwoods

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

I had the unfortunate experience to encounter galvanized steel nails in a small log i meant to chop for the winter but the damage isnt so bad that it cant be worked out on coarse stones

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

Im using it for the purposes ive listed above but i dont believe this to be practical for downing a tree bigger than say 16 inches across without needing to sharpen the blade again just take care as the powder coating comes off if you dont have good sharpening technique

Would not recommend for sport throwing as the handle is likely to make it rebound if youre a novice and the balance makes it a bit more handleheavy
