I have placed above and below the hammock and would suggest below only because above you have to move your tarp further up to make room for the underbelly but it does make for grabbing things in the middle of the night easier

The underbelly is great awesome fast and light way to store your gear up off the ground but you have to throw the whole 18 inch off the ground disclaimer right out the window of you want to use it

I had a few issues with getting the proper hang as the gear was touching my backside while laying in the hammock but that was operator error and was fixed through a few iterations
