Pros & Cons

Pros

The book parallels the original as well as it possibly could, although does get off track towards the end. It mirrors the overall tone and diction of the original. It's funny and a total page turner. It’s clever in a way i wasn't expecting.

Some plot and character threads proceed as expected, some take some unlooked-for twists and turns. Would have been 5 but for a too drawn-out tacked-on ending. Just an absolute spot on contemporary counterpart.

Curtis sittenfeld is a genius. Which is what kept me hooked till the very end. It’s very well done.

In this modern retelling, the girls are grownup and jane and elizabeth live in new york. When their father has a health scare, they return to their childhood home in cincinnati to help and discover that the sprawling tudor they grew up in is crumbling...  Read More

Chip bingley is a neurosurgeon in cincinnati. His friend, fitzwilliam darcy, is also a neurosurgen. Both are married with children.

Cons

I was never sold on the romance between jane and bingley or liz and darcy. One dull semi-sarcastically, liz asked darcy, are you a regular here? Why does william collins still kiss lizzy and propose marriage even though they’re step-cousins? The autho...  Read More

Liz is not so sensible, and she has morphed into the family fixer. Hardly intelligent and witty repartee.

Curtis sittenfeld is probably the most overrated writer in the us today. This author is no jane austen. Perhaps in austen times, there was a different understanding of wit and impertinent.

The author attempts a cheap mimicry and her embarrassing endeavor to write satire results in a tragedy.

Rarely do i read some new information that makes me view the original novel in any different way

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

To take characters that to me are so mild and sometimes bland in retellings and truly update them into characters i not only understood but related to while keeping their original integrity and truly bringing jane austen’s story to life quite literary reopened my eyes to what a ground breaking and phenomenal novel pp is

For example in pp lydia is annoying spoiled and self centered with zero filter

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

She’s downright scandalous with her self centered cruel and selfish behavior

The same goes for mrs bennet
