The back is exposed and we purchased a piece of custom cut stainless steel to attach to the back to finish the look.

If you have a hollow under your cabinet (which i did) then the instructions basically say put a 2x4 in there and mount the hood to the 2x4.

You have to stand three feet from the hood right in front to be able to use it.
