    Well, today, while replacing the battery, i broke the a wire to the battery terminal, and decided that it was time to replace the device with a newer unit that would obviously have an on/off switch.

    There don't appear to be any better devices available (the very expensive unit that detects magnetic field fluctuations is based on a highly dubious concept that definitely hasn't been established in the way p wave sensing has).
