Pros

Abra is a bright little girl who has a whole lot of shine. Rarely is a sequel good, but this was fabulous.

The story stays with me the whole time i’m reading it. The leads learn to use their hearts to guide their basic, at times fury-driven, gift in beneficial ways. I love that they are basically vampires. They are mysterious.



Cons

The charming hokey style that is king's calling card is more contrived than usual. Whoever wrote the screenplay did a much much better job than king did with the book.

To me the otherworldly stuff is boring. Some parts just feel gratuitous and ugly. To make matters more cheesy, the book constantly references her angry smile.

A flimsy explanation fails to satisfy why the overlook was haunted. It's way too long, has at least three endings and is frankly dull and not even remotely scary. The shining = redrum.

    I watched stanley kubricks movie adaptation of the shining a long time ago and even though i loved it i felt big chunks of the story were missing
