Pros & Cons
Pros
Open-back is more for playing old-time style, also known as clawhammer or frailing style, and it's much lighter than the resonator. The sound is surprisingly bright and loud for an open-back, and the low action and light-gauge strings make it very eas... Read More
The design is simple without a lot of frills, but its essence is pure, everything i need and nothing i don't. Basic in construction, but solid. Vast improvement over the previous goodtime in aesthetics (in my opinion) and a time tested platform.
Not a single ding or blemish on the instrument. My only issue is that it doesn't come with an armrest.
The goodtime's guitar tuners are actually more precise than the planetary tuners on my eagle ii. The fretboard is fantastic- plays well low and high on the neck. The mechanical 5th string tuner works great and all the guitar style tuners easily hold t... Read More
The deering goodtime is everything i wanted for an incredible price. Deering banjos keep the cost affordable by minimizing the frills.
Cons
With all the money i spent on this banjo, i should have bought one with a solid neck from a company that will stand behind their work. Deering does not -unless perhaps you buy one of their $5,000 banjos.
Highlights
Quality
It is exactly how it is described and i am thrilled at the quality
The quality is excellent at this price point
If youre in the market for a banjo as an entrylevel or intermediate player then bypass the junk and go with the deering goodtime
The comment is accurate as far as helping a beginner player but the banjo itself is not beginner quality or a toy
Price
The sound and playabillity that deering has assembled here for a low price is incredible
Highly recommended for beginners or even intermediates looking for a banjo that produces a wonderful sound that wont cost you too much
But this keeps the price point low
I used a citi price rewind to get this down to 460 by price matching to guitar center
Shipping
Its plays well right out of the shipping box
This box was in another box for shipping
Packaging/appearance
Arrived early and the packaging was awesome
I was pleasantly surprised how well it was set up right out of the box
I was careful to keep the deering out of the sand and salt water in case you wondered
It had perfect intonation and low action right out of the box
Competitiveness
Sounds wonderful looks wonderful and its made in the usa
Much better than my first banjo a lowend danville model
I’m only buying a travel banjo once so i decided to buy based on valuequality of product not lowest cost
I heeded some succinct advice to try out the deering goodtime as a reasonably priced highquality instrument for the novice

It is a greater starter banjo

It has no separate fretboard the neck is the fingering surface the wood is unstained it uses guitar tuners rather than planetary tuners the tension hoop is not plated and it has no side fret markers no tone ring no armrest and of course no resonator various other goodtime models are available that are stained and have planetary tuners andor have a resonator andor a steel tone ring at commensurately higher prices

But the truth is that none of that really matters much for the purposes of any beginner or intermediate banjo student and even for pretty much anyone who is just playing recreationally
