Pros & Cons
Pros
The writing is crisp and fresh, as if the writer has discovered these stories etched into panels of marble and just dusted away the grit and debris. Accurate and in many ways, deeply depressing. Thought provoking for these times.
A must read for anyone interested in america, it's people, and it's politics. For anyone who has traveled extensively in the us this book is a cultural homage to the geographies (by that i mean people and places) of the deep south.
Shocking insight in to how much the us government ignores the people in the south. Raises issues of racism, lingering civil war bitterness and opportunism of many of its political leaders, including one notable us president. This book sheds light on a... Read More
Theroux always writes with great clarity, and in this book his customary bile seems to have been diluted. It's obvious by the end of the book how enriched theroux was by the experience. He mourns the terrible shadow of past atrocity which has marginal... Read More
Theroux raises the unexplained point that the us gives billions away each year to third world countries, while leaving its own southern citizens in poverty. An interesting review of the attitudes to segregation.
Cons
The tiresome people and conversations are as never ending as the cotton fields he keeps insisting on describing. I'm a late comer to paul theroux, and gather from other reviews that this probably isn't his strongest work.

Given that its so recent its a shock to read that extreme poverty still exists in the wealthy us that exceeds even that in africa where theroux has travelled extensively and theroux himself is shocked by this discovery while segregation still exists either overtly or covertly

In fact it was reading his dark star safari that drew me to sampling more of his work and i found that i preferred the book on africa as it was more of a journey down the length of the continent with a beginning middle and end whereas deep south is based on a number of visits returning to the same places and people during the different seasons

His digging towards the truth of funding and bank loans to local communities to improve housing and to buy farm equipment is a shocking insight in to how much the us government ignores the people in the south of every colour
