Obviously not image-stablised but so long as the shutter speeds are high enough you should be ok.

Focus is tight and sharp, even when panning.

Despite its reach, this is not a monster lens.

An update after 2 years of use: the lens is great for the price, it is fast to focus and superb for birds in flight but you do need to keep the shutter speed up to get the best out of it, over 1/1000th for anything hand held.

I have to rate this 5/5 because imo i find it difficult to really say anything negative.

I chose this lens over the 300mm f/4l is - i figured, as i wanted to photograph birds, i needed as much focal length as possible, and since i've never used an is lens, i wouldn't miss it.

However, the weight does make framing a small, distant subject trickier - and a lack of is doesn't help.

Adding a teleconverter (extender) renders the viewfinder quite dark.
