It is fairly well finished on the front but on the back you can see where 23 of it is shiny and varnished

The only downside i would mention is that one of the two rubber feet that provides some grip and antislip chracteristics on surfaces found on the black plastic base fell off within a few days of using the stand

After a couple months of light use the paint on the page holders has already begun chipping off and one of the page holders seems to have lost some of its tension though it still works fine

I say 5 lbs because i bought this to do doubleduty for books and as a tilting stand for mediumsized portable shortwave radios such as those made by grundig sony and sangean
