The very beginning made me feel like it was intended for a ya audience and the writing seemed a little awkward which doesnt make for smooth reading

Ive had that thought about other books before and as is sometimes the case the writer has a style that takes a bit to slip into before you are so absorbed by the story the writing style is either no longer choppy or you no longer even notice what early on felt like an awkward turn of phrase or two
