Pros

Gunaratana's well-written books provide the foundation for my appreciation of 'mindfulness. This is the book i read after mindfulness in plain english. This follows on from his first classic.

After two and a half years of off-and-on practice, the increased mental clarity makes me notice when others are being manipulative. It is fascinating to explore the depths of possibilities in mindfulness by practicing or making a sincere attempt to pr...  Read More

Bhante gunaratana is so real that reading his words * to carry you further on the path of insight. Bhante g's sequel to mindfulness in plain english is a superb explanation, especially for the practitioner who must work alone.

Cons

The general tone of the book is impersonal. The only thing that i found inspiring and useful for my own practice are the verses on page 66-67 about the motivation to practice shamatha.

I only missed some more detailed information as to how immaterial jhanas could be attained when the practice of samadhi is based on anapanasati and not using a kasina object

But i guess the answer is in insight itself or vipassana and it could be inferred by mindful meditators as they apply it to breath by amplifying their vision of anicca

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

I would say the conclusion is that concentration in material and immaterial jhanas assists mindfulness meditation rather than deepening it although it is a factor leading to improved mindfulness and enlightenment with jhanas not as a goal in themselves

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

Since according to the author of this book himself material and immaterial jhanas are not necessary steps in the path to enlightenment their denomination as 34deeper states34 could be misleading before reading the book implying vipassana is incomplete without those jhanas

Consequently it might lead to unnecessary expectation so perhaps some readers should be warned from tne beginning

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

Read bhante henepola gunaratanas book 34mindfulness in plain english34 first before you read 34beyond mindfulness in plain english

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

You wont understand mindfulness to its deeper impacts and importance until you have read this work
